Lake Abbé & Lake Assal

Discover Lake Abbé’s surreal chimneys and Lake Assal’s salt shores.

2 Days / 1 Night Djibouti

Overview

This 2-day tour is the perfect introduction to Djibouti's most extraordinary natural wonders, packed into a short but deeply memorable adventure. From the traditional Afar and Somali villages of Dikhil to the surreal limestone chimneys of Lake Abbé, where you will spend the night under the stars, every moment of this tour is unforgettable.

The second day begins with a sunrise over Lake Abbé before heading to Lake Assal, the lowest point in Africa, with scenic stops at the Adaleh Canyon and the Goubet region along the way back to Djibouti City. Ideal for travellers with very limited time who want to experience the true wild beauty of Djibouti.

Day by Day Itinerary

Upon arrival in Djibouti City, you will be welcomed and begin a scenic drive to Dikhil to visit the traditional villages of the Afar and Somali people. Here, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and enjoy a unique lunch served inside distinctive village huts.

We will then continue our journey to Lake Abbé, a breathtaking natural wonder known for its towering limestone formations, some reaching up to 50 meters and numerous steam-emitting chimneys. This surreal, otherworldly landscape is so striking that it is famously associated with the classic science fiction film Planet of the Apes. You will have ample time to explore the lake and its surroundings until sunset.
