Somaliland

Somaliland

Somaliland is a peaceful, self-declared state in the Horn of Africa, rich in history, culture, cave art, and dramatic highland scenery.

As of late 2025, all nationalities are eligible for a visa on arrival at Hargeisa Egal International Airport. Bring a passport valid for at least 6 months, return or onward ticket, invitation support from a licensed tour company, and the visa fee. Horn Expeditions assists with the process before arrival.

Somaliland is one of the safest destinations in the Horn of Africa. A police escort is required for intercity tourist travel and is arranged as part of the tour logistics.

September to March offers cooler temperatures for travel and exploration. June to August can be very hot, while highland areas such as Sheikh remain pleasant much of the year.

Somaliland is a conservative Muslim society. Cover shoulders and knees, choose loose-fitting clothing, and dress respectfully in towns, homes, markets, and religious areas.

Somaliland Shilling is local currency, but US Dollars are widely accepted for tourist services. Bring clean newer USD bills and enough cash for remote routes.

Telesom and Somtel provide good coverage in urban areas. Local SIM cards are available with passport registration, while remote areas can have limited coverage.
Djibouti

Djibouti

Djibouti is an extraordinary crossroads of Africa and Arabia, known for volcanic landscapes, salt lakes, whale sharks, Afar culture, and French influence.

Most nationalities can apply for an e-visa online. You normally need a passport valid for 6 months, passport photo, return ticket, accommodation details, and payment.

Djibouti is generally safe for tourists with strong security presence. Travel with licensed operators for remote sites and avoid restricted border areas.

October to February is whale shark season and the coolest travel period. May to September can be extremely hot in lowland and desert areas.

Djibouti is relatively relaxed, but modest dress is appreciated in local neighborhoods. Light breathable fabrics are essential.

Djiboutian Franc is the official currency and is pegged to the US Dollar. USD and Euros are accepted in many tourist settings, but cash is still important.

French and Arabic are official languages, while Somali and Afar are widely spoken. English is common in some tourism settings.
